GEMA
Germany's collection society for composers, lyricists and music publishers, administering performance and mechanical rights; its tariff rates are among the highest of any collection society.
- Best for
- Germany-based writers; thorough collection, strong rates. Germany-based songwriters and composers whose music receives regular streams, broadcasts, live performances, physical releases or other licensed use—especially when expected royalties comfortably exceed the annual fee.
- Skip if
- You are not based in Germany, earn little from songwriting, primarily release royalty-free or Creative Commons music, need to license individual works outside a collecting society, already belong to another PRO or only own master-recording rights.
- First move
- Read membership obligations before your next German release. Use GEMA’s profitability calculator before joining. Estimate your annual performances and streams, review the Deed of Assignment carefully, then register every eligible work and contributor promptly after membership begins.
- Watch out
- Assigns all your works — understand obligations before joining. Membership transfers broad administration rights to GEMA, which can limit direct, royalty-free or alternative licensing of covered works. Members organizing their own concerts or manufacturing releases may still need to license their own music through GEMA. The annual fee can exceed the royalties of hobbyists, and GVL—not GEMA—handles German performer and master-side neighboring rights.
